Shane Delia's Spice Journey - Malta to Lebanon

In the first episode of Shane Delia’s Spice Journey, Shane heads to his homeland, the old Phoenician outpost of Malta, where the aromatics and spices of the Middle East mingle with European traditions of the Mediterranean. From there, he follows Phoenician trade routes across the sea to Lebanon and the ancient port city of Tripoli, famous for its seafood, souks and sweets. At Ta’ Mena Estate we are producing typical Gozitan foods. We are using traditional recipes which were used by our fore-fathers who did not have refrigerators and freezers but still had to provide for the winter season.

Their small secret was the use of the unique Mediterranean Sun and natural preservatives, particularly marine salt, to preserve several foods and beverages namely the Sun Dried Sweet Tomato Paste , the Sun Dried Tomatoes, Wild Capers in Vinegar and the Prickly Pear Liqueur.

Our guests are invited to involve themselves in fruit and vegetable picking and experience the preparation of these traditional food products which include:

Activities

At Ta’ Mena Estate you are being immersed in the typical Gozitan country-side, surrounded by the natural and calm environment with breathtaking views. The estate is situated in the picturesque Marsalforn Valley between Victoria and Marsalforn Bay. The estate includes a fruit garden, an olive grove with about 1500 olive trees, an orange grove, and over ten hectares of vineyards. It enjoys the panoramic views of the Gozo Citadel and the surrounding hills and villages.

It is situated less than 3 kilometers from the blue Mediterranean Sea within easy reach of the fishing village of Marsalforn and the world famous Ramla Bay with its sandy beach, overlooked by the legendary cave of the Nymph Calypso. The estate is an excellent point of departure for interesting sightseeing tours of the extensive heritage found in Gozo. This includes the Neolithic Ggantija Temples which are the oldest free standing buildings in the world dating back over 5,500 years; the Citadel with its outstanding bastions, the Archeology Museum and the Cathedral, the geological park of Dwejra with its Azure Window and all the exceptional churches, various museums and other places of interest in the different villages of the island.

At Ta' Mena Estate we cultivate vines, olives, lemons, oranges, various fruit trees, strawberries, tomatoes, melons, water melons and other vegetables. We produce our own wine in a state of the art winery, press our olives to produce a unique cold pressed extra virgin olive oil in our modern olive press and produce various typical liqueurs and foods from our different fruit, vegetables and herbs. Our sundried tomato paste is a must to try!

We also organise guided tours around the estate followed by wine and food tasting sessions, which can include light lunches. Hands on agricultural experiences are also available during the harvest seasons.

The estate offers an experience with a difference with its particular spots and self catering apartments. We can also offer accommodation in typical rustic farmhouses completed with all amenities and private swimming pools.

Activities

At Ta’ Mena Estate we organise guided tours around our extensive vineyards and olive grove followed by wine and food tasting. We can organise these tours on any week day for groups of at least 10 persons at 8.00 Euros per head. We can orgnize transport from anywhere around Gozo.

We can also offer lunches and dinners for groups of not less then 15 persons. Prices from 15 Euros plus VAT per person.

Pre-booking is necessary.

Walking tours around the estate are available any day from 8:30 to 17:00. No pre-booking is necessary. Entrance is free of charge.

We do not organise activities on Sundays.
